Tidemark

Echoing the humble fishing huts that line Canada’s eastern shores, the Gable Ends Cottage demonstrates how restraint in form can yield a quiet, yet enduring elegance. It is a distilled interpretation of coastal vernacular—at once rugged and refined—designed to endure harsh climates while preserving a sense of warmth and intimacy. Elevated on slender steel columns, the Tidemark model minimizes disruption to the landscape, both during construction and long after.

Inside, the plan is compact and efficient, encompassing 940 square feet. Living spaces are organized around a central core that houses a small washroom, galley kitchen, and stair leading to a sleeping loft above. A double-height great room creates a sense of openness, accommodating dining and gathering while extending seamlessly to a covered porch beyond.

Materially, the design remains flexible, allowing both interior and exterior finishes to adapt to regional building traditions, supporting straightforward construction and cost efficiency. More than a statement, the Tidemark model is an exercise in coexistence—an architecture that responds to its surroundings with humility, engaging the landscape, climate, and environment rather than asserting dominance.
